At an early age he studied with Bela Pratt at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, but most of his training came from working in the studios of older sculptors.

De Lue apprenticed with Boston sculptor Richard Recchia and also with Bela Pratt and Robert Baker where he would master the art of sculpting the human figure. Number 6 of an edition of Brown patina on Imperial Black marble base. Signed: 'De Lue / sc / c / 6/12 Tx'. Cast at the Tallix Foundry, Beacon n II is De Lue's second essay in sculpture on this subject. Phaeton II also exhibits a design that must be viewed in the round to fully understand it. The strong contraposto turns the head and the torso in opposite directions.

Donald De Lue was probably the greatest monumental American sculptor of the 20th century and his work continues to amaze. His works include the foot "Rocket Thrower" at the NYC World's Fair, the "Spirit of American Youth" at the site of the Normandy invasion, two monuments at Gettsyburg, "George Washington at Prayer" at Valley Forge 5/5(4).

Donald Harcourt De Lue was born Donald H. Quigley in Boston in to an Irish American father and a French American mother whose maiden name he eventually adopted as his own. After showing some drawings at age 12 to Boston sculptor Bela Pratt, De Lue became an apprentice in the studios of Pratt and his assistant Richard Recchia.
